Peter De Backer was born on January 2, 1967. Together with his only sister Peggy, he grew up with mother Edwighe Coppens and father François De Backer. Billiards was brought up to him from the start. When Peter was about 7, Papa already played carambol and golf billiards at a fairly high level and after the matches of Papa, Peter was allowed to take up the cue and make the first punches. The start of a great career….
At the age of 11 Peter was connected to BC Sint-Anna and played the club championship and also his first city cup in Aalst. With dad's expert help, he graduated 2 categories a year and at the age of 16 took his first class with his professor Emile Wafflard. At that time he already played excellence class in all categories on the small format (2.30 m).
He always combined carambol with golf billiards. In golf billiards he won the coveted title “Trophy of Champions” 3 times and also became Belgian Champion individually and in pairs together with Frank Van Liefferinge. He is the only player to win the Belgian title on both carambol and golf billiards.
Thanks to his teacher Emile Wafflard Peter also made the transition from the small to the large format (2.84m) very quickly. He was also promoted to the honorary class in three cushion in the juniors.
In 1991 he became European champion for the first time in the 47/1 frame discipline in Ypres. In 1993 he became European champion for the second time, but now in the frame 71/2 and this back in Ypres. A year later he added a third European title in the frame 47/1 in Vienna.
Peter has won dozens of national titles (carambol and golf billiards) in all kinds of different disciplines. In 1993 he was elected player of the year in both carambol and golf billiards. He was also twice elected sports laureate of the city of Aalst, succeeding the well-known tennis player Sabine Appelmans. In 1994 he became World Triathlon Champion per team together with Eddy Leppens and Pol Stroobants in Essen (Germany).
March 2, 2009 he starts his own billiard shop “PDB-ART”.
